He arrived in the European Theatre of Operations on 5 December 1943.
While based at Cheddington he met a British girl, with whom he had a baby. Bixel's descendants believe he met her at the Old Sun pub in Ampthill, which was where she was evacuated. Bixel returned to the USA on 11 August 1945.
