Richard Ziegler was a foreman at Raritan Arsenal in what is now Edison, NJ. He entered the service in April 1942. He originally served with the 8th Air Force in England but was transferred to the 15th Air Force, 483rd Bombardment Group, 840th Bombardment Squadron based out of Sterparone, Italy. Plane, B-17 42-32010, went down on his 47th mission on July 30th, 1944. Mission was to bomb the Tokol Airdrome in Tokol Hungry. Captured and interned at Stalag Luft IV, Gross Tychow, Pomerania (Now Tychowo, Poland.)

Seen through a 433rd Bomb Group B-17 Flying Fortress' strike camera, a 816th Bomb Squadron B-17 Flying Fortress (serial number 42-5786) nicknamed "Whizzer II" goes down over Nis in Yugoslavia on the 15th of April 1944 in a gout of flame after taking a direct flak hit. I have my uncles memoirs which I would be happy to share. I have the MACR. I also have the eyewitness reports from other planes in the group that observed his plane going down. I have digital copies of newspapers listing him as MIA, then POW and finally liberated.
