M/SGT Rice C. Linn photo collection, 91st Bomb Group (H), May 1942 – September 1945. Prior to the beginning of WWII Rice C. Linn was a member of the Texas National Guard, 112th Cavalry Regiment, 56th Cavalry Brigade. With war looming he resigned the guard and joined the Army Air Corps in August 1939. He completed basic training at Randolph Field, San Antonio, Texas and then to Scott Field, Illinois for Radio Operator/Gunner training. He was subsequently assigned as an air crew member in the 3rd Air Force, 29th Bomb Group, 52nd Bombardment Squadron, at Langley Field, Virginia. After training at Langley Field the 29th Bomb Group moved to MacDill Field in February 1940 to conduct anti-submarine patrols off the eastern seaboard and gulf coast. The 29th Bomb Group earned the Antisubmarine Campaign Streamer and the American Theater Streamer during this time. He met Kathryn Jane Gause, who lived less than one mile from the main gate of MacDill Field, in October 1941. In May 1942 he was assigned to the newly formed 91st Bomb Group (H) to begin training for deployment to the European Theater of Operations. After initial group training at MacDill Field he departed for Walla Walla, Washington in late June 1942, then to Gowen Field, Idaho and Dow Field, Maine. M/SGT Linn served with the 322nd Bombardment Squadron and the 91st Bomb Group’s Air Inspectors Office during his time at AF Station 121, Bassingbourn, England, September 1942 – June 1945. He married Kathryn Jane Gause in Dallas, Texas in July 1945 and he was discharged from active military service in September 1945. He attended a number of 91st Bomb Group reunions prior to his death in August 1979. He was very proud of his service with the 91st Bomb Group and kept up with his many friends, including Malcolm Coubrough, Don Northcott, and his commanding officer, Major William Cornell, throughout the remainder of his life.
