William H Wilhelmi III

William Wilhelmi served as a pilot with the 712th Bomb Squadron of the 448th Bomb Group, flying missions out of Seething, England. He was assigned to the squadron on 31 July 1944.



On 24 March 1945, he was wounded by small arms fire during a combat mission. Another crew member was also injured and Wilhelmi and his co-pilot landed their aircraft at RAF Manston in Kent. He convalesced in Britain for a few weeks at Coombe House before returning to the United States.

Correspondence with William Wilhelmi's son, Ginger: 'I learned after I sent the email that my dad was at Coombe House for a respite week. I also found pictures of him bicycling and other activities where I could see either the building or signage in the background that made it very clear. '
