Richard Peters was a WWII tail gunner from Dundee, Michigan. His father William Peters, owned a house on Cake Road Dundee, Michigan and his mother Lucy Peters was a stay at home mom. He was the youngest of three children but he grew up as an only child because his older brother Elmer and his sister Edna had already left the house to start their own lives. His parents both only went to school up until the 8th grade. Richard attended school at the Bragg District and then Petersburg High School, where he graduated in 1941.
Richard Peters enlisted in March 2, 1943 at the age of 18. He received his training at Tent City in St. Petersburg, Florida, before being sent to Buckley Field, Colorado and received his diploma at Lowry Field, Colorado. He was later sent to gunnery school at Laredo, Texas and received his silver wings there, on September 13, when he graduated as an aerial gunner.
He was assigned to the 467th Bomb Group and flew with the 790th Bomber Squadron, as a tail gunner on a B-17 Flying Fortress. Richard had been in England for three months before his final mission on April 29th 1944, His last letter was dated April 25. He was on his way to bomb Berlin, when the plane was intercepted by enemy fighters over Hanover. He was last seen at 11:00 A.M. before bailing out of his damaged plane. Five crewmembers were killed and four became prisoners in Germany.
Today Richard Peters rest at the American War Cemetery Ardennes Plot B, Row 43, Grave 30. His Purple Heart award was received by his parents, August 10, 1944. Besides his parents, he was survived by one sister, Mrs. Edna Schrader of Detroit, and a brother, Elmer Peters, of Ypsilanti.
