Hank wrote to his grandma on 5 October 1943 saying: ‘Dad’s probably told you that Eleanor and I are going to be engaged when I return home on furlough. You’ll be happy to know that I took your advice and saved enough money from my pay each month for the ring. Dad’s making it for me.’

Hank Hyde served as a pilot with the 366th Fighter Group. He had enlisted with the Royal Canadian Air Force on his 18th birthday in 1941. Later transferring to the USAAF, he arrived in the UK in January 1944. Hyde was killed on an armed reconnaissance mission over northern France on 7 June 1944, the day after D-Day.

Shortly before his death, he wrote to his father: ‘The worst is yet to come. Still, I’m looking forward to it with much expectation.’
