KIA on 1 Sep 1944 when the engine of his P-51D-5, A/C #44-13895 failed after becoming airborne on take-off on an operation mission from Gael Airfield, France. The Mustang impacted a grove of pine trees off of the end of the runway. It was determined that a faulty casting of the first stage supercharger allowed coolant to seep past the seals into the induction manifold and flooded three cylinders and fowled all of the spark plugs.
