In 1940, Peter went to Canada to join the Royal Air Force (RAF). With 529 hours of civilian flight time, he enlisted on Aug 24 in Ottawa. In mid-Sept, he boarded the Royal Mail Ship (RMS) Erin, bound for England. Disembarking at Liverpool on Sept 14, 1940, he spent the next fifteen months in the United Kingdom. His first day of flying in the RAF was Sept 17, 1940, and his last day of flying was Nov 30, 1941. During which time he racked up 484 hours of flight time.

Initially, he went to the Central Flying School (CFS) at RAF Station Upavon, from Sept 17 until Oct 7. He then transferred into the 5th Service Flight Training School (SFTS), where he received military flight training from Oct 15 to Dec 26.

On Jan 15, 1941, he transferred to 71 Eagle Squadron, where he served until July 28, 1941.

He then transferred back to the Central Flying School (CFS) at RAF Station Upavon. There he was trained as a flight instructor from July 28, 1941 to Sept 6, 1941.

After passing Central Flying School (CFS), Peter spent the next three months, from Sept 8 to Dec 8, as a flight instructor with the 1st Service Flight Training School (SFTS) at RAF Station Netheravon. At the end of Dec 1941, Peter boarded the HMS Morton Bay, bound for Canada.

From Jan 1942 to June of 1942, Peter spent the remainder of his Royal Air Force service in Canada as a flight instructor.

Upon Arriving in Canada, Peter made is way to the town of Weyburn, in the province of Saskatchewan. On Jan 7, he arrived at the 41st Service Flight Training School (SFTS), where he served as a flight instructor until June 16, 1942 whereupon he relinquished his commission in the RAFVR and transferred into the USAAF.

On Oct 29, 1943, Peter was on a low altitude patrol, when his wing man clipped his tail. He went into a tail spin, to low to eject, he was instantaneously killed upon impact.

The crash occurred in Wake county, North Carolina southeast of Raleigh.
