Arrived in England in 1943 and assigned to 4th Fighter Group, Debden as a Red Cross worker.

In August 1944 assigned to the Rest Home Division at Eynsham Hall, near Oxford.

Later assignd to Knightshayes Court and became Assistant Red Cross Director.

Anne was Assistant Director of the USAAF Rest Home at Knightshayes Court, Devon. At this ‘flak farm’ she helped combat-weary airmen recover from the strain of their missions. She remembered one occasion when an aircraft crashed nearby: ‘I was playing cards beside the huge windows. My partner was a young pilot who had recently been the sole survivor when his bomber exploded on take-off. He was extremely traumatised and I had spent many hours trying to help him rejoin the world. And then the horrific explosion and fireball so close. He bolted out doors and raced towards the woods. Luckily some other officers caught him just before he reached the fire.’
