Nacogdoches, TX, USA | 9 November 2008 | Funeral services for Lowell Keith Halls, 90, of Nacogdoches, Texas, were held on November 13, 2008. Lowell passed away November 9, 2008 in Nacogdoches, TX. Burial was at Sunset Memorial Park. Lowell was born on May 17, 1918, in Monticello, UT, the son of Frank and Elizabeth Halls. He grew up in Monticello, graduated from Monticello High School in 1936 and attended Utah State University before World War II. During World War II, he served in the Field Artillery, transferred to the Army Air Force and was attached to the Eighth Air Force in Europe, completing 30 missions as lead bombardier, and then served 21 years in the Air Force Reserves, retiring as a Lt. Colonel in 1978. After World War II, he attended Colorado State University where he earned a B.S. Degree in Range Management and then a Master's Degree in Range Management from Texas A & M University. In 1949, he went to work as Range Conservationist at the Southeastern Forest Experiment Station of the U.S. Forest Service in Tifton, GA. In 1957, he transferred to the Southern Forest Experiment Station in New Orleans, LA, as Assistant Division Chief in Range, Wildlife, and Watershed Management. In 1961, he was transferred to Nacogdoches, TX as Project Leader of Wildlife Habitat Research until his retirement in 1981. During this time, he taught classes for the School of Forestry, Stephen F. Austin State University, in Range and Wildlife Management. He was associated with The Society of American Foresters, Texas Forestry Association, The Society of Range Management, The Wildlife Society, The Texas Outdoor Writers Association, and the Kiwanis Club. Honors received include the Texas Forestry Association Award of Merit, Texas Chapter of the Wildlife Society Service Award, the Wildlife Society Publication Award and the Southeastern Conservationist Award for outstanding contributions to Fish and Wildlife Management A lifetime member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, he served in many positions, including Scout Master, Branch President, Ward Clerk and High Counselor. Lowell lived a vivacious life. He enjoyed playing racquetball with his friends. He also enjoyed hunting. However, Dad was happiest with a fishing pole in one hand and a fish on the line. His love for the red rock of Southern Utah led to many trips with friends and family. However, to know Dad is to know of his love for his church and most especially his family. He married the former Jane Floyd in 1946. She preceded him in death in 2003. Additionally, a son Mark died in 1980. Survivors include son Steven (Melissa) Halls of Newburgh, NY; daughter Sallie (Roger) Dodge of Saratoga Springs, UT; son Keith (Heather) Halls of Orem, UT; and son Michael (Jan) Halls of Nacogdoches, TX. He is also survived by 13 grandchildren: Eric Halls, Jamie Dodge, Ryan Dodge, Jeremy Dodge, Cory Dodge, Christina Wright, Rebecca Jackman, Mark Halls, Michael Halls, Matthew Halls, Erica Anderson, Kristen Halls and Kevin Halls. Additonally, he is survived by seven great-grandchildren: Tyler Halls, Marshall Halls, Ethan Halls, Dallin Dodge, Landon Dodge, Blake Dodge and Darci Dodge. He is also survived by sister Sally Garard of Mesa, AZ, brother Bill Halls of Elko, NV and sister-in-law Gwen Halls of Phoenix, AZ. |
