Winfield Scott
Military ROLL OF HONOURArrived in England October 1942 with unit. Participated in North African and Sicilian campaigns. Returned to England in early 1944 after troop carriers were transferred to Ninth AF to participate in D-Day air drops of troops in Normandy and later Nijmegen, Holland. Returned to US in July 1944 for 30 days Rest and Recuperation. Second tour began with Nijmegen air drop, and unknown to him his brother Kenneth Scott Jr. helped provide fighter escort and cover for the mission. He had been in the service 3 years and two months when he was killed at age 22. [C-47 crashed just after dusk in bad weather near Halton RAF station, Buckinghamshire, on a return flight from Brussels. Also killed were 2nd Lt. Charles V. Smith (pilot); 2nd Lt. Robert W. Masling (copilot); and SSergeant David Francis. ]
