Willliam Godfrey Rekart
MilitaryWilliam G. Rekart and his crew were shot down on their 16th mission by flak and crashed at New-Schulzenedorf on 6/21/44 in B-24 42-95075. His surviving crew from The Happy Hangover were greeted by Herman Goering himself and the SS who saved them from an angry mob. Bill spent a few weeks in a Berlin hospital recovering from a broken knee sustained during the parachute jump. He was treated well there. Bill was a POW for 11 months and, as he entered the POW camp for the first time, he was greeted by shouts of "Bill Rekart!!" from his longtime best friend, Romie Brandehoff. Bill was part of the 86-day Black March from 2 February 1945 to 2 May 1945 across Germany and back again. On the morning he was liberated, he was drawing water from a well in a small town while a German soldier stood guard with a rifle. Thinking he was "a goner for sure", he was very pleasantly surprised when the soldier handed the rifle to him and put his own hands up in surrender.
