8/25/44 plane 'Big Shorty' shot down. Pilot nursed it back to 30mi from Holland where they went down in North Sea. All crew was rescued by RAF Shot down first two missions, Aug. 16, 1944 (lost two engines), Aug 25, 1944 (lost three engines) 2nd shoot down ditched in north sea, picked up by British boat whose commander was Thornton, who was the 2nd Dr. Who of British TV. Flew over 30 missions, awarded Lucky Bastard Cert. on Feb 24, 1945.
