On 6 Feb 44 Cpl Miller was awarded the Distinguished Unit Badge for his heroism on the night of Jan 21, 1944 when a British Bomber crashed on the base as he was cycling back from the town. He immediately went to the aid of the crew and broke down an obstruction so he could reach the wounded crew members, he also attended the dying pilot. He didn't leave the scene until all bodies were loaded aboard vehicles taking them to medical care.
