Killed in Action (KIA) on 22-OCT-43 in P-47D 42-7989, 353FG / 350FS, piloted by 2LT Walter B Stone while providing fighter escort (White Flight) to a formation of B-26s from 9th Air Force. The aircraft was last seen entering a cloud formation at 16,000 feet. It is suspected that the aircraft may have been involved in a mid-air collision. The aircraft crashed near St. Omer, France.
