Vernon F Currie

Military

Flew 35 missions from December 1944 until end of the war.

A navigator with 322nd Sqdn, 91st 'Ragged Irregulars' Currie remembered above all the mission in the Spring of 1945 when they lost their old faithful 44-6578 'Rusty Dusty'. It was still dark when the planes were taxiing for take-off and - as they routinely halted to check engines - he saw the props of the following B-17 'chewing' into their wing. As crew safety officer Currie went to check on everybody and, as he did so, smelt gasoline. As he moved through the plane his parachute harness got hooked on some wiring and he was virtually hung up in the middle of the bomb load with fuel spilling everywhere. He managed to break free, exited the open waist door and 'ran like hell'. Fortunately no one was injured but 'Rusty Dusty' never flew again.
