26 missions. Verl D. Anderson and his crew flew two planes during their missions -- the first was "One Meat Ball", which was shot down over Germany. The crew made it to France, hiding by day and moving by night, individually, with the help of sympathetic German families. Picked up in France, they were returned to their base at Attleborough, where they continued their bombing raids with their second plane, "Hot Stuff".

Abilene, Kansas | 26 March 2010 | Verl Dean "Andy" Anderson 88, Abilene, Kansas, died Friday March 26, 2010 at the Village Manor, Abilene, Kansas. He was born February 7, 1922 at Agenda, Kansas, the son of Henry Oscar and Gladys Laurel (Pentico) Anderson. He grew up in the town of his birth, attended the local schools and the College of Emporia. He entered the Army Air Corps and served with the 8th Air Force. He married Catherine McHugh and they had two children, Douglas Dean and Vicki Lynn. They later divorced and he married Dorothy Glenda Phillips in 1975 in Lawrence, Kansas, thereby gaining another son and daughter, Mark Allen and Debra Dawn Hall. Verl received his B.S. and M.S. degrees in Education from the University of Kansas. He taught at WaKeeney for one year, then served at USD 407 Russell from 1949-1976 as teacher, coach, principal, Assistant Superintendent, and Superintendent of Schools. He served as Assistant Superintendent of schools at USD 435 Abilene from 1976-1988. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Abilene, Kansas, a Life Member of the National Education Association; Life Member of the VFW in Abilene and Russell; Masonic Lodge, Abilene and Russell; American Association and Kansas Association of School Administrators, United School Administrators, Elks Lodge, Abilene and Russell, and the Abilene Country Club. Surviving are his wife Glenda of the home, son Doug and wife Brenda, Belton, Missouri, daughter Vicki Cathey and husband Steve, Casper, Wyoming, stepson Mark Hall, Topeka, Kansas, step-daughter, Debra Rhoton and husband Bob, Lawrence, 3 grandchildren, 2 step grandchildren, 4 great grandsons, 2 step great grandsons, an aunt Juanita (Pentico) Beneda and husband Frank, Agenda, Kansas, and other relatives. He was preceded in death by his parents. A celebration of Verl's life will be held Tuesday March 30, 2010 at 10:00 AM at the First United Methodist Church, Abilene, Kansas with Pastor Jim Edwards and Pastor Merle "Bones" Nay officiating. Burial will be in the Abilene Cemetery with Military graveside honors. The family will receive friends at the Martin-Becker-Carlson Funeral Home, Monday evening March 29, 2010 from 7-8 P.M. Friends may call at the funeral home until time of service. |
