Lt. Roy Brockman was assigned to the 338th Bomb Squadron, the 96th Bomb Group, in the 8th Air Force, USAAF. Lt. Brockman flew 35 missions in the famous B-17, named, 5 Grand : Bremen 4 Aug 44; 7 Reims; 9 Nurnberg; 13 Gessicourt; 14 Ludwigshaven; 26 Brest; 27 Berlin; 1 Sep Frankfurt; 3 Crozon Kerret; 5 Stuttgart; 8 Chemnitz; 13 Diosgyor; 25 Ludwigshaven; 26 Bremen; 27 Mainz; 30 Bielefeld; Oct 2 Kassel; 3 Nurnberg; 5 Munster; 7 Lutzkendorf; 22 Munster; 25 Hamburg; Nov 2 Merseburg; 4 Neunkirchen; 6 Duisburg; 9 Saarbrucken; 21 Osnabruck; 26 Hamm; 27 Bingen; Dec 4 Mainz; 11 Geisen; 24 Darmstadt. He was transferred to the 482nd Bomb Group to fly Mickey (Radar Operators) on training flights around England. He left Alconbury, U.K. on the eve of VE Day and was on a train to Southampton on VE Day. He can recall going by train through suburbs of London, seeing factories with British bunting draped over the outsides, hanging from roofs, and windows. Also, apparently, a women's undergarment factory where the girls were leaning out of the windows waving brassieres for the benefit of the men on the troop train.
