14 July 1943 - 6 September 1943 with the help of French citizens and members of the French Résistance, after the crash-landing of B-17 #42-3190 in Berengeville-la-Campagne, five miles NE of Evreux, France. He was led all across France into Spain, then to Gibraltar, from where he flew back to England. Back in UK on 8 September 1943
