"Graduating high school in 1942, he was drafted into the army but joined the Air Force when they were looking for volunteers. He was sent to Jefferson Barracks in Lemay, Missouri for Boot Camp and was there about 3-4 months. After that he was sent to Gunnery school in Ardmore, Oklahoma."

 

S/Sgt. Robert Bohyer was part of Lt. Edward C. Unger's crew who ferried the B-17G, 43-37716, '5 Grand', over to Britain and the European Theater of Operations. Bohyer flew 10 missions with the 8th Army Air Force from England, and another 25 missions from Italy.

 

Awards: AM (4OLC), GC, American Campaign, EAME (4BS), WWII Victory.
