Providence, RI | 11 December 2002 | RENATO "RAY" IAFRATE, 76, of Greenville, a former skate sharpener, died in Rhode Island Hospital, Providence. Son of the late Beniamino and Assunta (Casinelli) Iafrate. Husband of Mary (Piti) Iafrate, with whom he celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary June 21. He was also predeceased by his brother, the late George Iafrate. Born in North Providence, he had lived in Smithfield for 40 years, previously living in Providence. He was known for his skills as a skate sharpener and worked from his home sharpening skates for Providence College, the former Rhode Island Reds, and other teams. In earlier days, when the Smithfield Ice Rink held hockey tournaments, he was the preferred choice to sharpen the skates of hockey players from the United States and Canada. Mr. Iafrate was an Army Air Forces veteran of World War II. He served with the 306th Bomb Group, 8th Air Force, as a ball-turret gunner on B-17s in Europe. He was a member of the Greenville VFW Post 2929, the Smithfield Little League and the Smithfield Senior Center. Besides his wife, he leaves a son, Robert Iafrate, and a daughter, Diane Iafrate, both of Greenville; a sister, Clara Chartier of Pawtucket; and three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Burial, with military honors, in St. Ann Cemetery, Cranston. |
