Floyd was from Birmingham, AL. Born in 1918, he attended Auburn University (then Alabama Polytechnic Institute) where he was a member of the Cadets (ROTC), and studied chemical engineering. After the war, he remained in the Air Force Reserves. He met his wife of over 60 years, Hazel from Liverpool, UK, in Wellingborough, just a few miles from the airfield in Chelveston where he was stationed. Hazel was in the Royal Land Army, and was stationed on a nearby farm. They met at a Red Cross dance only 2 weeks before D Day.
