On take-off on one mission to Germany the bomber was overloaded, Captain Smith wanted to abort the take-off, Tech. Sergeant Carr was in the cockpit at the time, he put his hand on the throttles, kept them full on & told Captain Smith to get the plane off the ground or they would be a fireball at the end of the runway. The bomber barely made it off the end of the runaway moaning & groaning to altitude with the wings curved up. Captain Smith put Tech. Sergeant Carr in for the Distinguished Flying Cross upon return of the mission.
On another mission over Germany Tech. Sergeant Carr noticed a yellow-nosed German Fighter -one of Field Marshall Goering's aces, trailed by a squadron of trainees. The ace was teaching the trainees how to barrel roll in & out. At the end of a roll Tech. Sergeant Carr took out the ace with twin 50 calibers from the bomber's top turret behind the cockpit. Morie said the trainees were like shooting ducks in a pond.
Dad at the end of his missions over Germany wanted to get on the ferry command ferrying B29s from California to the Mariannas, the Air Corps. offered him gunnery instructor with a commission, he decided to discharge instead.
