Capt. Cox was the Intelligence Officer (G-2) for the 751st Bombardment Squadron, 457th Bombardment Group, Heavy. On Oct. 7th, 1944, he was assigned as a special intelligence observer aboard B-17 #42-102905, piloted by Lt. Clarence R. Jennings of the 748th Bombardment Squadron on a mission (#133) to bomb the synthetic fuel sub-factory at Police (Politz in German), Poland.



Cox was in the nose of the aircraft with Bombardier Lt. Stuart W. Jakku when the plane was hit by flak. Capt. Cox was killed instantly by shrapnel, Lt. Jakku was severely wounded and would succumb later, and two engines were knocked out. Pilot Jennings was able to complete his bomb run on target, then nurse his plane to Sweden and land on a grass strip near the town of Jonkoping.
