Beauford Smith was from the coal mining camp town of Insull, KY. He was good friends with and attended Black Star High School with Harold A. Brassfield. Brassfield was KIA on 6 March 1944 flying with the 388th BG. Smith and Brassfield were able to visit with each other in England on a couple of occasions.
Smith flew several anti-submarine patrol missions before being assigned to the 44th BG. He was given credit for 3 combat missions for that work. He then flew 22 more combat missions with the 44th BG.
When Smith returned home he settled in Trenton, NJ where his girlfriend lived. They married on Christmas Day 1947.
