Leonard A Polley

Military

1940 graduate of Bloomington High School where he was active in football and wrestling. Attending Indiana University when he entered the US Army Air Corp as a mechanic in January 1941.

Received his mechanics training at Chanute Field, IL before he became an aviation cadet in Jul-42. He took his primary training as a flier at Thunderbolt Field, AZ and his basic training at Mintor Field, AZ.

In Dec-43, he was transferred to the European Theater. Assigned to 381st Fighter Squadron, 363rd Fighter Group, 9th AF USAAF.

Failed to Return from escort mission, flames seen on water by squadron colleague who had spiraled down towards water on instruments and nearly crashed himself. Pilot Lt Leonard A Polley KIA. MACR 3073.
