Object Number - UPL 37558 - "Crew 15 of the 613th Bomb Squadron, 401st Bomb Group, in front of a Boeing B-17 "Flying Fortress" at an 8th Air Force base in England, 4 September...

Assigned to 613BS, 401BG, 8AF USAAF. 32 missions from 6 June to 3 October 1944; volunteered for fill in gunners 2 times. On 21 June 1944 over Hamburg, Germany, we were hit by flak and the oxygen system was hit and leaking. Being in the tail my oxygen ran out and I passed out. Was thrown forward from the tail clear down to the radio room where I was revived. Oil covered the whole side of the ship from #2 engine. I was bleeding all about my head and had a terrible headache. That was my third mission. Lost 80% of my hearing that way over the next few months.
