My father, Joseph Roche, wrote in wrote in his diary "My Life in the Service", that he was transferred to the 365th on 24 June, 1943. It was the day before his final mission when he was shot down. Since he only needed one more mission to complete his 25, he requested to fly the one more mission on the "Mama Chung". Since his crew had also been transferred as he was, the rest of the crew on the plane that day did not include any of his original crew. The pilot was Lawrence Wilcox. Dad told me that, after losing one engine to fighter fire, a second engine caught fire and the pilot pulled the fire extinguisher on the wrong engine, reducing them to one engine.
My father's medals are in my possession, given to me by my mother after my father's death.
