France | 25 September 1944 | Damiani was shot down returning from a "non-combat" "Truckin'" mission hauling gas to Patton's 3rd Army in France. On this day they had delivered gas to St. Dizier airfield in France. On the return trip they were seen circling at a low altitude over a French town helping the French civilians celebrate their liberation. Unfortunately there were still German AA units in the area. The Germans scored a direct hit on the Damiani a/c, B-24H-10-DT "Jamaica?". With little altitude there was no chance to bail out. The six crewmen on board were KIA. Because it was a supposedly non-combat mission, three gunners and the bombardier were not on the mission. Ironically no crews got combat mission credit for these gas haul missions. |
