While on a shipping recce off the Dutch coast, he located and attacked a convoy protected by several flak ships. His A/C was struck by flak and he notified his wingman he was going to bail out. Before he could his Spitfire VB P8339 nosed over and went in from 1,000ft to become 4th FG's first casualty 21-9-42. Killed in Action (KIA).
