John S Chalfant
MilitaryServed as a Pilot of the leading airplane of a Combat Bombardment Wing composed of B-17 aircraft on a bombing mission over Germany on 9 August 1944. On this date the formation in which Col. Chalfant was flying encountered extremely adverse weather conditions along the route to the objective. Col. Chalfant skillfully piloted the aircraft toward the target of importance and succeeded in breaking through the weather front. Although the Wing was alone and without fighter protection, he proceeded to an important objective where bombs were released with good results. Upon leaving the target area Col Chalfant expertly flew the course back to England with a minimum of damage to the formation. For his courage, coolness, and tenacity of purpose Col. Chalfant was awarded an Oak Leaf Cluster to his previously awarded Distinguished Flying Cross award.
