Lt. John L. Downing joined HQ in April 1943, transferring to the 370th Fighter Squadron on 2 March 1944, then returned to HQ in May 1944. He was then assigned to the 496th FTG on 7 August 1944. Lt. Downing flew 83 combat missions with the 359th Fighter Group.
