Killed in Action (KIA). On mission to St. Nazaire in B-17 #42-5724 28 June 1943 was hit by heavy, accurate flak. Went down in the English Channel with only 2 survivors who were rescued by French fishermen. Kaufmann's name is commemorated on the Tablets of the Missing at the Cambridge American Cemetery.
