James K Hoover
Military ROLL OF HONOUREnlisted in the Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) on 01/11/1941. Received his commission as pilot officer at Hagersville, Ontario, 9-Oct-42. Hoover arrived at the port of embarkation, Halifax, Nova Scotia, on 27-Oct-42 and departed for England. On 05-Nov-42 Hoover reported for duty with the Royal Air Force.
On 23-Mar-43, he transferred to the U.S. Army Air Corps (USAAF) and was assigned as a lieutenant in the 409th Bombardment Squadron on B-24's. In June of 1943 he was sent to North Africa TDY 9th AF. Flew on 1st Aug 43 Ploesti oil refinery raid. A/C having been damaged, landed and was interned in Turkey, in October he was able to rejoin his unit.
Co-Pilot B-24 41-24298 'Queenie', shot down by Me 109 fighters on 13-Nov-43 mission to Bremen, Germany Port Area. Plane crashed into North Sea, off west coast Isle of Amrum near Norddorf, Germany. KIA. MACR 2198.
Lt Hoover had flown 54 missions (RCAF and USAAF) over enemy territory before he was killed in action.
