Shot down 16 September 1943 in B-17 #42-30030 'Old Ironsides'. Plane ditched in North Sea. Returned to base. According to records lost his leg in the Ditching. It ditched south of the Farne Isles off the Northumberland coast. It sank in about 4 minutes. The survivors reached St. Cuthbert's Island in the Inner Farnes in their dinghy. Two gunners were lost.
