The rear Mustang in the image was previously identified as belonging to 338th Fighter Squadron, 55th Fighter Group, by Roger Freeman, as 'CL' is the squadron code for the 338th FFS.

Information provided by Pykersuggests that the 111th Tactical Reconnaissance Squadron used C as a designator whilst with the 12th Air Force in the MTO, but was also in use when they transferred to the 9th Air Force later in the war.

Inspection of the hi-res image (available via download button) reveals that the serial number of the rear aircraft is 43-103403, Joe Baugher a/c Serial number search confirms that this aircraft belonged to the 111th TRS.
