A B-29 Superfortress of the 498th Bomb Group, 20th Air Force in flight over the Tama River, Tokyo. Printed caption on reverse: '12/20/44 SUPERFORTRESS SPREADS WINGS OVER TOKYO. Flying at substratosphere height, an American B-29 Superfortress flies over the Tama River, just west of Tokyo, onits way to blast war plants in the Japanese capital. One of a formation of B-29's based on Saipan in the central Pacific, the bomber was aided by perfect visibility in hitting its objectives during the daylight attack. This is the first photograph of a Superfortress over Japan, which Saipan-based B-29's are striking with increasing frequency and severity.'
