Corporal Peter J Basoa of the 94th Bomb Group tests his electrically heated flying suit with Sergeant JM Ballo. Image stamped on reverse: 'Associated Press Copyright.' [stamp], 'Passed for Publication 14 Dec 1943.' [stamp] and '296510' [Censor no]. Printed caption on reverse: 'AN ENGINEERING SECTION OF A US SERVICE SQUADRON. Basic clothing for Fortress crews in the sub-zero temperatures at high altitudes is the electrically heated "zoot suit". Past practice at this bsae, and present procedure at most bases is for the crews to don their zoot suits, add thier outer clothing and go on a mission without a test of any kind. Many planes have had to return when it was discovered that the heated suit of one crewman was out of order, so Staff Sgt J M Ballo, 3240 Central Ave, Pittsburgh PS rigged several of these simple test panels and now each crew man checks the working of his electric heating system before setting out on a mission there are plugs on the board also to test both gloves and boots that are equipped with heating elements. Associated press photo shows: Sgt Ballo (right) is shown here testing a new panel with Cpl Peter J Basoa, 371 Crimmins Ave, New York City (Left) wearing a "Zoot Suit".'
