"S/Sgt. Maynard H. Smith of Caro, Mich., ball turret gunner on a Boeing B-17 is shown in position on the plane during a mission from his base in England. Sgt. Smith received the Congressional Medal Of Honor for his action on his first operational flight when he fought off a FW190, fought a fire that had broken out in the plane and gave first aid to a wounded tail gunner, all at the same time 13 July 1943."
