Photo dates to pre-April 1944, before the chequered noses appeared. Martin Smith will be killed on July 19th 1944 in a crash at Duxford 'buzzing' the field as a passenger in a B-17 piloted by a mutual friend. He only had eight hours left to complete his tour.
