On 12 March, 1943 Douglas Taylor departed from Mobile, AL, crossing the Gulf of Mexico, he flew over his father and step-mother's residence Tarpon Springs, FL and dropped a rock with a note attached. Quinney, his wife of was a Sergeant in the U. S. Army and a woman pioneer in radio broadcasting. He eventually travelled the South Atlantic Air Route to join the 320th Bomb Group in Tafaraoui, Algeria
