Injured Staff Sergeant Roland E. "Lefty" Nairn, a togglier of the 95th Bomb Group, waits to return to the United States aboard Army Hospital ship USAHS CHARLES A. STAFFORD. Nairn has written on reverse: 'R E "Lefty" NAIRN togglier- gunner+armourer. B17-G 336 sqdn 95 BGp- Horham. Wounded March 21, 1945 over Handorf, Germany. Taken as I was being placed aboard the USS STAFFORD[sic], Army Hospital Ship in May 45. Arrived NY City, NY Harbour on Memorial Day 1946[sic]. lt looks like the conveyance I was on was left over from WW1. Lefty.' Nairn has written on reverse of a duplicate print: 'S/Sgt R.E "Lefty" Nairn being transported home . I believe this was taken on the docks at Liverpool. This was one of the mysteries of the military - If you wanted to ensure yourself of a quick air flight home, become a volley-ball, Jeep or bicycle accident victim. For the slow bumpy ride home become a combat casualty. Lefty Nairn. Yes I was left handed. PS. German intelligence knew everything !!!'
