A formation of B-17 Flying Fortresses of the 91st Bomb Group return to Bassingbourn after a mission, July 1943. Passed for publication 29 Jul 1943. Printed caption on reverse of print: 'Flying Fortresses Return From Deepest Penetration Into Germany. Carrying out their deepest penetration into Germany thus far, strong formations of American Flying Fortresses dropped bombs on Kassel in the Eastern Ruhr, and Oschersleben, less than 100 miles from Berlin. The unescorted bombers had to fight their way through swarms of enemy fighters, including black night fighters. Prelimniary claims are that more than 60 enemy planes were destroyed.
