Captain Alfred N. Steiner, Officer of Communications, US Air force at Mendlesham Airbase. May, 1944. Originally from Newark, NJ, Captain Steiner received cadet training/officers' training at Yale University ("We polished endless brass doorknobs), and took air bombing training in Arizona ("We lost more pilots there in training than in the war"). He was then sent to England to join forces with the RAF at Mendlesham Airbase in advance of the Normandy D-Day invasion. He flew many bombing missions with his crews, acting as radio/communications officer, and ultimately landed in Normandy where he was hidden by partisans in a French village. One of the little daughters of the French village (named "Collette"), supplied him with fresh milk and treats and kept him covered with hay until liberation. Captain Steiner was promoted to Major Steiner, and flew the food airlift to the Netherlands to relieve the starving Dutch. Later he became a Lt. Colonel and served in Newfoundland during the Korean War. Steiner passed away in Sedona, Arizona in September 2009. He is survived by three daughters, one granddaughter and two great grandchildren.
