22 February 1945: Labelled "battle damage" by the PR folks, the destruction was actually the result of a landing accident. P-51D 44-15576 "Sweet Mama II" (coded 5E-P) of the 385th Ftr Sq, 364th FG was rolling out with Flt Off Sidney S. Stern at the controls. John W. Kiernan was landing behind him in Capt Arthur B. McCormick's P-51D 44-15179 (coded 5E-L), "Look Homeward Angel II." Overtaking Stern, Kiernan ran up on his tail. Both aircraft were apparently repaired.
