Formal presentation of Distinguished Flying Cross to Lt. Col. Elliott Roosevelt and his group for outstanding services performed by the group in the African Campaign. [Note B-17E 41-9045 'Stinky' provides the backdrop]. NARA Ref 342-FH-3A28691-B23665AC. 27 December 1942: "Stinky" provides a backdrop for the award of the Distinguished Flying Cross to FDR's kid: LTC Elliott Roosevelt, commander of the 3rd Reconnaissance Group in North Africa. Less than three weeks later, on 15 January 1943, this B-17 would be written off in a forced landing in Athenry, Ireland. While all the occupants survived the accident unscathed - including six general officers (J.L. Devers among them) - sliding through a stone wall damaged the ship beyond economical repair.
