IMAGELt. Harold Motz's "Lucky Bastard" certificate, a mock award given to bomber crew upon the completion of their combat tour before being rotated back to the U.S. A combat tour was originally conceived to be 25 missions in 1943 but was increased to 30 missions and eventually 35 missions as the crew survival rate improved throughout 1943 and 1944. Harold did return to the United States and was given leave before being assigned to the Air Transport Command for service in the Pacific theater until the end of the war. Although the certificate refers to Harold serving on the bomber "Shack Happy", it appears that he flew only one mission on that aircraft.
