Karl on the watch tower at Thorpe Abbotts, on a joint visit by the German Fighter Pilots Association and the 100th Bomb Group Foundation. 'Karl-Frintz Schröder, who I had known for many years through my own research. Karl and his pilot was nearly shot down into the North Sea in May 1941 on a dusk mission, their Messerschmitt 110 getting back to base with combat damage from a British night fighter. Karl was shot down twice on the Russian Front. The first time his pilot managed to land in 'No mans land'; the second time was over Russian territory. He was behind Russian lines for three days, hiding during the day and travelling at night to avoid detection. '
