Hank Hyde and his sweetheart Eleanor Keller. Hank wrote to his grandma on 5 October 1943 saying: ‘Dad’s probably told you that Eleanor and I are going to be engaged when I return home on furlough. You’ll be happy to know that I took your advice and saved enough money from my pay each month for the ring. Dad’s making it for me.’
