P-38 Lightning Mk I AE979 [foreground] and AE978 with engine running behind. From a RAF contract, Alison engined, though both engines rotated in the same direction and without turbochargers fitted. RAF trials showed A/C unsuited to ETO operational use and returned to USAAF after trials and used as trainers by USAAF.
